Biannual festival educates the public about the importance of water resources
The 2020 Florida Water Environment Association (FWEA) Florida Water Festival will take place on March 7, 2020, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the England Brothers Park in Pinellas Park, FL. The free festival will include a variety of family-friendly educational opportunities for children of all ages to learn about water, such as careers, where their used water goes, as well as opportunities to interact with representatives from their local utilities and people “who work for water.”

“A child explores the inside of a sewer pipe filled with examples of items that should (and should not) be flushed.”
Festival exhibitors will conduct public education and awareness through hands-on, family friendly activities. A few of the confirmed activities at the festival will include:
• Live music
• Face painting
• Touch-A-Truck featuring Utilities’ vehicles
• Live animals and marine invertebrate touch tanks
• Wastewater treatment demonstrations
• A “Walk for Water” to raise awareness of the distances people from around the world must travel each day to access water.
In addition, several exhibitors at the festival will include local community partners such as the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg College, Eckerd College’s Marine Science Club, Keep Pinellas Beautiful and Owl’s Nest Sanctuary.
The goal of the Florida Water Festival is to educate Pinellas County citizens about their water resources, including some topics they may or may not think of on a day to day basis. Topics including where does their wastewater go, what does or doesn’t belong down the drain, the types of equipment and careers available in the water industry, as well as the connection to the environment will be displayed.
The Florida Water Festival is a volunteer-led event that includes various county and city partners including the City of St. Petersburg, Pinellas Park and Pinellas County. The festival is put on biannually by the West Coast Chapter of the FWEA. The FWEA is a professional organization comprised of utilities and wastewater professionals from across the state, with a vision for “a clean and sustainable water environment for Florida’s future generations.” The Water Festival supports the organization’s mission by supporting and uniting its members and the public through public awareness.
