As a For-All shelter, SPCA Tampa Bay accepts all animals regardless of the circumstance or situation. Since January, SPCA Tampa Bay has received an influx of over three hundred and fifty small animals from the community, including rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, birds, reptiles, and livestock. There are many reasons why an animal shelter receives animals, and every single situation is unique.
Recently, a good Samaritan brought SPCA Tampa Bay thirteen homeless rabbits who were spotted outside at a local mobile home park. This is just one example of how quickly small animals can multiply when they aren’t properly cared for and how fast an animal shelter can become inundated. Four of the rabbits from this intake have been adopted, but there are still nine rabbits from just this one surrender awaiting their forever homes.

Another rabbit, by the name of Santiago, was surrendered to SPCA Tampa Bay when his previous owner was no longer able to care for him. In 2023, almost nine hundred small animals and livestock came to the For-All shelter through owner surrenders. Santiago spent over one hundred days at the shelter and quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite. His adoptive parents stumbled upon him when a young man was reading to Santiago and instantly knew he was the rabbit for them. He is now living happily in his new home.

Small animals like Santiago (and all pets) come with a lifetime of care. Guinea pigs can live five to seven years and rabbits from eight to twelve years, so it is important to consider if you are able to make that commitment before adopting. Both of these animals are highly social and do best in pairs or small groups, so are perfect if you are looking to add a few furry friends to your family. If you’re interested in adopting a small animal, SPCA Tampa Bay’s staff and volunteers can assist you in finding a pet that’s right for your family’s lifestyle. The adoption team focuses on matching families and all pets for long-term success.

SPCA Tampa Bay is located at 9099 130th Avenue North, Largo, Florida 33773. Adoption hours are on Wednesday through Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Potential adopters are encouraged to bring a carrier or housing that’s appropriate for your new pet.
