A Light in the Dark Tunnel of Life
Vision is an important aspect of every human's life. It is one of the main senses we use to learn and interact with the world around us. Unfortunately, not all humans have the gift of good sight. Most people can have their vision corrected with either glasses or contact lenses. Some have poor vision even with them, and the degree of vision loss can vary. Visual impairment can be caused by different ocular diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma. Having bad eyesight can limit a person's abilities with communication, mobility, and independence. However, there is a non-profit organization called the Lighthouse of Pinellas (LHP) to help these individuals acclimate to their environments even with their limited vision.
The LHP was established in 1956 by the Lions Club of St. Petersburg and was originally named the “Sight Center.” In over 60 years, LHP has served hundreds of patients with visual impairments and blindness. Their mission is “to advance the independence and quality of life for individuals in Pinellas County who are blind or visually impaired.” They aim to empower clients through education and skill development, fostering independence, and improving quality of life.
Their services include the following:
Orientation and Mobility Training: Helping individuals navigate their environment safely and independently.
Vision Rehabilitation Therapy: Offering training on adaptive techniques for daily living tasks.
Support Services: Providing emotional support, counseling, and resources for individuals and their families.
Community Programs: Organizing activities and events to promote socialization and inclusion.
Advocacy: Working to raise awareness and promote the rights of individuals with visual impairments.
At VIP Eye Care, we believe vision is priceless. Everyone in our office understands the importance of our patients being able to see their best, whether it is with contact lenses or glasses. As a board member for Lighthouse of Pinellas, I have been able to learn more about what services are available to individuals that are blind or visually impaired. If you, or someone you know, is dealing with loss of vision, please contact one of our offices to schedule a comprehensive eye exam to see if they qualify for the free services at LHP.
